Born on May 22, 1949 in Alert Bay, a small fishing village off the northeastern coast of Vancouver Island, Alfred Seaweed has a deep connection to his Kwagiulth heritage. His family crests, the Sisiutl and eagle, were passed down to him from his parents and are commonly used in his traditional Kwagiulth jewelry designs. Following in the footsteps of his family, Alfred began carving at a young age and later apprenticed under the tutelage of the late Kwagiulth artist, Lloyd Wadhams, in 1978. Focusing on silver and gold as his mediums, Alfred's artwork is highly respected within the native community for its faithful representation of Kwagiulth mythology and commitment to preserving ancestral carving traditions.
