Kelvin Thompson is an expert in crafting both silver and gold jewelry as well as bowls and masks from alder, maple, and cedar. He studied under and collaborated with renowned Haisla artists Barry and Derek Wilson at the Vancouver Aboriginal Friendship Centre in 1979 and also worked on a totem pole with Haisla carver Henry Robertson in 1980 for the Centre's collection in Vancouver, BC. Kelvin has since been adopted into Henry's Haisla family and continues to push the boundaries with his jewelry designs, incorporating techniques such as oxidizing and intricate cut-out work. He is also dedicated to passing on his knowledge and skills to younger artists, as evidenced by his teaching of the Northwest Coast Jewellery Arts Program at Vancouver's Native Education College alongside Haida/Kwakwaka’wakw artist Dan Wallace.
