Johnny is from Cape Dorset located on Baffin Island in Canada's Arctic Nunavut Territory. Baffin Island is a mighty landscape of mountain ranges, icecaps, glacial valleys and open tundra. Carpe Dorset is world famous as a centre of Inuit Art. He began carving as a teenager and is largely self-taught. His mother, Komajuk Tunnillie, and grandparents Tayaraq ans Qavaroak Tunnillie, were all accomplished carvers in Cape Dorset. Markoosie mainly works with animal themes, which he treats with a characteristic whimsy.
